Why Choose A Labradoodle Puppy Over A Lab?

Choosing the right breed or hybrid breed of puppy to add to your family is not easy. Many people ultimately decide that a Labrador or some cross with a Labrador is right for them. The friendly, loving lab personality is just so hard to beat. But should you choose a Labrador pup or a Labradoodle pup? There's no right or wrong answer to this question, but here are a few reasons why many people end up choosing a Labradoodle over a pure lab.

Labradoodles Are Hypoallergenic

Labradors have short fur, and they shed quite a lot. They also tend to have a lot of dander. For this reason, they do not necessarily make the best dogs for people who have allergies. If you have a lab in a home with a person who is allergic to dogs, you'll have to make sure you do a really thorough job of vacuuming and cleaning up their fur. Labradoodles, on the other hand, are hypoallergenic. They have longer hair that does not shed, thanks to their poodle parents, and they produce very little dander, which makes them less likely to make a person sneeze and itch. Someone who is allergic to dogs still may not want to bury their face in a Labradoodle pup, but they shouldn't have trouble living in the same home as the dog.

Labradoodles Are Often Smaller

Labrador pups tend to grow into fairly large dogs. There are large Labradoodles, too, but if you want a smaller one, they are available. If the breeder crosses a Labrador with a miniature poodle, the result is a much smaller dog than your average lab. If you live in a smaller home or simply want a dog that weighs less, a Labradoodle puppy is a better bet. Make sure you ask the breeder about the predicted adult size of a puppy before you bring it home, though.

Labradoodles May Be Healthier

Labradoodles, like most hybrid dog breeds, have something called "hybrid vigor." They tend to be less prone to health problems because they have more diverse genetics, having come from two different breeds. Yes, there are plenty of healthy Labrador puppies, too. But if you have to roll the dice on the matter, you stand a better chance of getting a really healthy pup when you choose a cross-breed such as a Labradoodle.
