Of course you want to place your aquarium where it has the most visual impact. You also want to put it where everyone can see it and enjoy it. However, there are other considerations you must make as well. Before you get hung up on finding the perfect visual location for your aquarium, take some time to think about the practical needs of your aquarium and its inhabitants. Following are three things you should consider when choosing a place for your new aquarium.

Sun

If you place your aquarium in direct sunlight, it can be more difficult to care for. Not only will direct sunlight make it more difficult for you to control the temperature of your aquarium, it can stimulate the growth of unwanted and unsightly algae.

Why are these two things of concern? Your aquarium is an ecosystem made up of lots of interdependent organisms, from the fish you can see to bacteria that you cannot. All of these living things require a steady temperature to thrive. In fact, aquariums shouldn't fluctuate in temperature by more than a couple of degrees daily. Algae is ugly, and algae growth increases the maintenance requirements for your tank. It can also steal nutrients from the water and block light that other plants need to survive.

Traffic

While fish aren't especially excitable, they can get stressed. If you place your tank in an area where there is a lot of noise or traffic, you can almost guarantee that you will have stressed fish. This is especially true if the tank is in an area where it is bumped regularly. Stress can leave fish without and appetite and gasping at the surface for air. It can also make them more susceptible to certain types of illnesses, such as ich, fungus and bacterial infections.

Accessibility

Your tank will require regular maintenance. While you can have someone perform the maintenance for you, keep in mind that your tank will require service weekly under normal circumstances. If there is a problem, it will have to be serviced more often. Since service is vital, make sure that your aquarium is in a spot where it can be serviced without interrupting your customers or causing a huge disruption.

When choosing a location for your aquarium, it's important to consider the needs of your fish. Always strive to choose a location that is visibly stunning and perfect for the health of your fish. Contact local custom aquarium designers for further assistance.
